MARKETEERS Carnival Club unveiled its new shed in Bridgwater last week – built with a little help from its friends.
Hundreds of carnivalites turned out for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Bristol Road base, constructed on land leased from Bridgwater Carnival Committee.
Club members worked extremely hard to build the shed after last year’s carnival – bringing it in ahead of time and on budget.
But Marketeers treasurer Dave Kirk revealed that the generosity of members and carnivalites across the town helped bring in almost half the cash to fund the base.
He told the Mercury: “After we got turned down by the bank for a loan we decided to start a ‘buy a brick’ scheme, charging at least £50 a brick.
“There are 157 bricks in our wall of fame, which paid for about 45% of the shed costs.”
The special wall now stands proudly at the new base.
Last week’s opening ceremony also brought to an end a turbulent year for the club, which saw them leave their former base at the Halfway Inn.
Marketeers now hope its new home, which is double the size of their previous shed, can spur them on to greater glories.
Alan Windsor, Marketeers club captain, added: “The club would like to thank every single person and organisation for their help during the most difficult year in the clubs long and illustrious history.
“Without you help, generosity and kindness the club would have never made it to the position that we are now in.
“For all of your help we will be eternally grateful and it will never be forgotten by anyone at the club.”

Cabaret Show time – The next Cabaret is Sat 12th December. We have over 325 people attending the cabaret and once again we will be looking for extra help from all aspects of the club on the night of the Cabaret. This is vitally important as the last cabaret was such a success due to the help and support we received from all aspects of the club. Please, Please make a note of the date in your diaries and come down to lend us a hand. The quicker we get people served the more money we can make and have to spend on a county cup winning entry in 2010.
