The Cupboard Monster
The World Famous Official News-Letter of the

MARKETEERS CARNIVAL CLUB

Chairman: Steve Wright Captain: Alan Windsor Treasurer: Ian Barber Secretary: Mark Cheffy

What, No Munchkins??

As you read this we are now an official Jon Horsey free country, I’m sure you all agree with me by sending him our best wishes to him and his family in the Wonderful Land of Oz. Hopefully by the wonders of the Interweb, Jon will be able to read this and hopefully soon we’ll have a contact email address for him, so peeps can get in touch with The Horse.

Talking of the great man himself, in a bid to wish him Bon Voyage a large majority of club members (Past & Present) descended on the Old Market to give Jon a good send off around the towns’ pubs. After a quick couple in Old Market followed by posing for a Mercury photographer, we marched En mass into the town centre, a few drinks in the high street was quickly followed by a trip down memory lane with a stop off into the White Hart, where the Tile Liberation Front were also having a few drinks. With Said Tile in tow, we staggered off to watch the football on the British legions Impressive Big Screen TV. Whilst watching the football some of the more puzzled members of the group had a game of Jenga (the game where you stack blocks of wood then take them out again) it may well sound boring. But, when there are 10 quite large tipsy men playing it, a lot of noise is generated from this new spectator sport which we are hoping will be included in London 2012.

A trip to Lions nightclub followed as did Bar 27, BW arms and after that I have no recollection apart from everyone signing Jons shirt and giving him a signed Tile which was liberated from The White Hart earlier in the day.  The night ended with dancing to the irreplaceable sounds of DJ’s Trev & Wins. And everyone especially Jon went home happy as a sand-boy.

The next week saw the Clubs Annual Pontoon Dinner, after a delicious meal it was time for the traditional game of Heads and Tails (won by Gord) and then the club trophy presentations.
Steve and Matt took to the floor for the traditional speeches and trophy giving.

First Trophy of the Night was The Slade Award (Awarded for the years biggest Financial Disaster) which Went to Jamie Turner – this was for accidentally throwing away a couple black bags full of Pint Glasses.

Next up was the Admiral Blake Dipstick Shield – This went to Dan Cullen and Steve Trunks (Bald Monkeys) who when leaving Burnham Carnival started following the cart to Shepton Mallet, what they failed to notice though, was the cart in question wasn’t ours, and it was on the way back to Bridgwater.

After that was the Presentation of the Presidents Cup (most committed 1st or 2nd year member) Chunk took to the floor and presented this to James ‘Jimmer’ Gardner who has been a shining example of a good member since he joined last May.

Stage Personality was up next and Alan Windsor was presented with the trophy by Chairman of VPs Paul Brazewell.

Paul also presented the Vivian & Alec Bosley Shield, this once again for his unbelievable effort out on the cart went to Dan Cullen.

Next up on the list was the Darryl Taylor Marketeers Marketeers award, this was presented by Matt Knapp and voted on by all club members, Vice presidents, Honoury and Life members – this was tied and Matt presented the trophy to both Alan Windsor and Mark Cheffy.

The final award of the night was as ever the Clubman of The Year Award, after a conflab between the committee members several weeks back, due to his unbelievable amount of work on both the NVQs and the Big Boost lottery Funding Matt presented the award to Mark Cheffy.

Photos and a video of the night are online at www.bridgwater-photos.co.uk

On to the usual day to day stuff of carnival, a cart design has been finalised and there are people out the shed every Tuesday beginning to put together this year’s entry.  Stage preparations are also well underway and regular meetings are occurring.

On a more down beat note, unfortunately attendance at both Club meetings and VP meetings has recently been extremely poor. Only 12 VPs turned up to their AGM which was held in the Blake Arms back in February (details of committee later on in newsletter) and attendance at club meetings has been suffering (especially the Mondays held out at The Halfway Inn).

Members seem to finding it increasing easy not to attend meetings and enter there apologies (and in some cases not even enter an apology). This has to stop, if the club wants to continue in the fashion we have become accustomed too, more commitment is needed from the members. As it states in the club rules, all apologies must come through a committee member and missing 3 consecutive meetings without apology could result in expulsion from the clubs membership.

Obviously no-one on the committee wants to see this action taken, but we are hoping that membership attendance at Monday night meetings will increase dramatically. The committee will be looking at attendance figures in the coming weeks at both members who do not apologise and members who continually apologise week in week out.

All Meetings are now being held in the Old Market Monday nights at 8pm, everyone is welcome to attend. It’s your club and only with your help can we achieve our ambitions.

On the fundraising front, with the Glastonbury festival fast approaching, the club are loking for volunteers to do stewarding for us on the perimeter of the festival, this is safe work and basically involves sitting in the sun for the day. Please see in the News section for more information.

On a more positive note Old Folks Show Rehearsals are in full flow and coming along nicely, this years seem is always will be revealed on the opening night, but we hope it brings as much laughter as our ideas in previous years.

Basically I ran out of thinks to write about so decided I'd make a Word Search, clues are underneath, I hope you have fun doing, it.

I hope you have fun doing, it.                   Alan Windsor

  • URGENT ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS AND VPS – On Monday the 26th March and Monday 2nd April All Members are required to attend the Old Market for a course on event marshalling, this is so we have enough recognised marshals to take on our Glastonbury commitments. We would also like as many VP’s to attend both the dates, the course starts at 19:30 and lasts for 2 hrs, and both weeks must be attended so that you gain your certification. If a member cannot be there they must inform me by Wednesday 21st March with a explanation to why they cant attend.
  • VICE PRESIDENTS MEETING – The next meeting of the Vice Presidents Association will be held in the Blake Arms on Monday 16th Apr at 8pm. Please make a concerted effort to attend. Apologies to either Paul Brazewell or Teresa Wright.
  • Glastonbury Festival 2007 – This year once again the club is providing Marshalls for the perimeter of the Festival Site. This is not hard or dangerous work and provides the club with one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. We can earn an awful lot of money for basically being sat down watching the world go by! All members must complete 2 x 12 hour shifts, but to complete our contract we are in need of help from VP’s, Associates and helpers etc. if any if you could help please contact Alan Windsor on 07966 210784. All help gratefully received you do not need to have attended the event marshalling course to work for us at glasto.
  • Stag Weekend – for those of you on Matt Knapps Stag weekend the balance in payment of £45 is required by the end of March, this covers your accommodation and also your fancy dress costume. If money not received by March 31st I will assume you no longer wish to come and your £30 deposit will be lost. Please also when paying your £45 let me have your contact details for any further information.
  • Say Hello – A big welcome to 2 new members, Ben Wright and Jason Bailey, both have had experience of Marketeers in the past through Steve Wright and Phil ‘Winnie’ Bailey respectively
  • Mines a Large one – Old Folks Show is this year being held on Thursday 29th March through to Saturday 31st March, as per usual the club will be partaking in a few social drinks, and if anybody wishes to join us you are more than welcome.
