MARKETEERS CARNIVAL CLUB

Chairman: Steve Wright Captain: Alan Windsor Treasurer: Dave Kirk Jnr Secretary: Adrian Horne

The Carnivoo is Over

Hello there, I hope everyone had an enjoyable carnivoo season and has now recovered from any amount of excess that you indulged in.

I think everyone will agree this has been the most turbulent year in the clubs history and without wanting to dwell on the past a sad day for everyone when they first past the now deserted Halfway. Of course we are now starting to see a glimpse of some light at the end of the tunnel, and with construction having started on the land for the new shed the club can rightly be very proud of what we have achieved this year as a whole.

The stage fortnight was once again a very enjoyable time for everyone involved, and a enjoyable stage show to be a part off. Once again the judges deemed we should come 9th but this in no way should detract from the amount of hard work that was put into the stage show by one and all. Only 6 weeks before concerts started we had no-where en-which to build our props and without the kindness of the Carnival Committee and the tremendous amount of hard work from some very dedicated individuals we would have been going on to an empty stage each night. And indeed the stage set was nominated by the judges for the Stage set cup.

The costumes used both on stage and road were on par with anything else out there, which considering they cost next to nothing is a fantastic achievement and credit to the 100’s of hours put in by the various costume designers and seamstresses. The make-up was once again at a very high standard and was commented on by several other clubs over the carnivoo period and a big thanks to everyone who helped to make us up.

The cart it-self was a little beauty and beautifully finished. Achieving 7th in Bridgwater was a fantastic result considering the size of the cart, the problems we have had this year and the conditions that we it was constructed in. I think everyone that helped build the cart deserves a special pat on the back, but more so the individuals that were out there constantly from the moment we moved in, to enable us to pull out an entry to be proud of this year. Finishing 7th allowed us to scoop the Gordy Howells Cup (highest aggregate points for stage and road for clubs that come out of the top 5), we also picked up most appropriate Music at Wells Carnival and were awarded county cup for Best decorated Generator (as you can imagine this caused plenty of joyous noise from the assembled Marketeers).

To be on the cart itself was an absolute honour, and was bouncing from the moment we started in Bridgwater to the second we finished at Weston. One member who graced the front of the lorry at Weston was heard to say ‘Never again, never again. Just stick me on the back from now on’. Thank you to everyone that went on and continued the tradition of The Marketeers Carnival Club.

Personally I had a cracking time (apart from narrowly avoiding drowning at Wells) and I hope that everyone else who took part or watched enjoyed it as much as I did.

Now the new carnival year is with us we will of course be busy fund-raising for next years entry, and with the idea in plans have been made in earnest to start construction of both stage set and cart as soon as we can. We still have additional fund-raising to do to complete the shed, but are not allowing this to distract us from our aim of winning Bridgwater Stage and Road in our 50th Year.

On the 50th Year, all arrangements for the anniversary party (June 5th 2010) are now almost finalised and I am pleased to announce tickets will be priced at £20 each (to include meal, entertainment & commemorative gift) please contact a committee member for tickets or for more details.

On a personal note I would like to thank every single person that has helped us this year and would like to apologise to any individual who didn’t have their name printed in the Carnival Mercury. Unfortunately the Mercury didn’t print everything we asked them too and completely omitted some names all together (whilst printing some twice). Why they did this is a mystery, but talking to fellow carnivalites we are not the only club to have had this happen to. In order to try and restore some balance I have attached the parts of the information that they left parts out of.

Cheers  -Wins

Any other items of interest:

The Marketeers Carnival Club would like to thank every single person and organisation who has helped us to come through the hardest year in the clubs history.  Without the support and generosity of many people & various organisations it is highly unlikely that the club would still be in existence today. And for this help we are extremely grateful.

Marketeers CC would like to thank all their sponsors for their continued support and we would also like to give a special thanks to the following – The Bridgwater Carnival Committee, Pentathalon Carnival Club, The Chameleon Trust, Jason Davie & Davies Engineering, Lee Singleton & all at TMB Pattens, Mike West & Somerset Carpenters and last but not least Traf, Jayne & all at the Old Market

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the carnival viewing public for our inability to this year bring out an entry to the standard that you have come to expect from us, and which we expect from ourselves.  However with all being well, we will be back with a BANG next year to celebrate the clubs 50th anniversary.

And finally we would like to apologise if we have missed anyone out, your help was sincerely appreciated and we apologise for the oversight. This has not been intentional and has only happened because The Club Captain is filling in the form with the hangover from hell.

News

  • A.G.M - The Annual General Meeting of The Marketeers Carnival Club has been set for Monday January 4th 2010 7.30pm start. Taking place in the function room of Bar27. Apologies please (if any) to a committee member or to Michael Butt.
  • Cabaret Showtime – The next Cabaret is Sat 12th December. We have over 325 people attending the cabaret and once again we will be looking for extra help from all aspects of the club on the night of the Cabaret. This is vitally important as the last cabaret was such a success due to the help and support we received from all aspects of the club. Please, Please make a note of the date in your diaries and come down to lend us a hand. The quicker we get people served the more money we can make and have to spend on a county cup winning entry in 2010.
  • Upcoming Bars – The club have a bar on the 5th December 2010 at Broadway village hall, this is a wedding for one of the club members and we feel that we will need assistance for this event. If able to help, please contact myself or a fellow committee member to advise us of your assistance
  • Getting Old Disgracefully – on a personal note I would like to thank everyone that attended my 30th birthday party (Held over Concerts) and for the kind gifts, especially the wonderful and touching gift presented to me by the club.
  • 50th Anniversary celebrations – a date and a venue have been booked, Saturday 5th June 2010 @ Chilton Trinity School, we have invited a guest speaker (who has agreed) and also booked a comedian. Tickets are priced at £20 per person.
  • Buy-a-Brick Scheme – A deadline of 1st December has been set for people to purchase bricks, so if you wish to be immortalised in Marketeers History you will need to purchase one by this date! As requested we are also accepting payments in instalments. Therefore if you haven’t got the money to spare in one lump sum, you can pay in monthly or weekly instalments, please speak to Jones about this venture.
