The Cupboard Monster Official News Letter of the MARKETEERS CARNIVAL CLUBChairman: Steve Wright Captain: Matt Knapp Treasurer: Ian Barber Secretary: Alan Windsor
Welcome to Issue 3 of the Cupboard Monster, Issue 4 will be available late March after 53 of us embark on Jones Stag weekend to Portugal. If you have missed any issues of this newsletter, it can be viewed on www.marketeerscc.co.uk Pontoon Dinner 2005 – Good Night had by all, Bad hangover had by someOn Saturday Feb 25th, the good the bad and the ugly of Marketeers carnival club gathered together at Bar27 for the annual pontoon dinner. With 106 people booked in to attend, the room was full to bursting, and after some juggling round of seats and tables by our very own Jason Brazewell and Julie Christodolou (Bar27) everyone was sat down and ready to be fed. And with everyone in his or her best bib and tucker (even the Splinter boys) everyone looked top-draw. The night started as ever with Grace, our president obviously thought this was too much for him and delegated it over to the new Chairman of the V.P’s Paul ‘Polly’ Brazewell. With the formalities over the food was up. And surprisingly, even though some of our better-fed members were among the first throng of the attack (naming no names Steve) there was plenty to go round, even the combined might of Dan Cullen, Big Del and Andy ‘Nobby’ Preston couldn’t exhaust the seemingly endless supply of food. With the all course’s served and happily tucked away, Jason Brazewell took over as master of ceremonies for the ‘World Famous Heads & Tails’. Tails was the order of the day and the first four rounds and the 106 people were soon reduced to 2. Louise Brown & Matt Knapp, with Matt choosing heads and Louise opting for tails there had to be a winner, and through some very dubious refereeing decisions Louise emerged the winner and took home the prize money, (1-0 to the splinters). After presentation of Ten-year ties to Matt Knapp, Ian Barber and Dean Waite, Chunk presented Trev & Jayne Watts with photos from this year’s carnival to display in the Old Market. Next up, it was prize-giving time and the first on the list was the Slade Award, the person to do the honours and award a trophy was our treasurer Ian Barber. For those of you unaware of the Slade awards origins, it was first presented in 2000 as a light-hearted award to celebrate one of the biggest financial disasters in the clubs history when a Slade tribute night went disastrously pear shaped. It has been awarded ever since for the biggest financial disaster of the year. This years winners were Andy Vallender - for ordering more wood than the Brazilian Rain Forest could keep up with & Garry (3 time winner) Martin – who having won the award last year managed to lose it. But thinks it might be in a suitcase in his mother-in-laws attic, but he’s waiting for his wife to go and have a look. Dipstick of the year was up next. This year the lucky recipients were Bob Anthony and Sam ‘Skiddo’ Chidgey. This was presented to the 2 of them after they were asked to paint a bundle of wood out the cart, how-ever in their wisdom they forgot to take it out of it’s packaging and there-fore gained the Admiral Blake Dipstick Shield. Next up was our President – Mr Chunky Dunster to present the Presidents Cup. This is awarded to the most enthusiastic 1st or 2nd year member, With this too tight to call, Chunk presented the award Jointly to Lewis White & Nick Ridgement. Next up was the King of all the Fairies himself and the new V.P Chairman, Mr Paul Brazewell to present the Viv and Alec Bosley Shield and the Stage Personality Cup. This was especially poignant for Paul as Alec was his best friend and is missed by everyone at the club. Dan Cullen won the Vivian and Alec Bosley Shield for the 2nd year running, this trophy is for dedication to work out the Halfway Inn. And Alan Windsor was awarded the Stage Personality Trophy, again, for the second year running. Mr Daryl Taylor was then invited to the stage to present the Marketeers Marketeer dedicated member award. After reading out the list of nominations, Alan Windsor was presented with the trophy. Finally it was time to present the Clubman of the year award; Matt read out the three nominations (Alan Windsor, Tim Knapp & Tony Ringland) and gave a brief description of why each one was nominated. Matt and Steve then presented Tony with the Clubman of the Year trophy. With the presentations over it was then time to celebrate, and with the stragglers leaving the premises at around 03:30 it was once again a very successful and enjoyable night. I hope that all of those that attended enjoyed the night, and all those that couldn’t make it are always welcome and we hope to see you there next year. Alan Windsor
