2001 Next Stop Clown Town
From the Bridgwater
Mercury
HOW many clowns does it take m create a new town Well, according
to Marketeers Carnival Club the answer is 24.
This year's entry from the well-established Bridgwater club -- Next
Stop Clowntown -- saw all the elements of a town with a difference
slotted on to the cart. Clowns from all trades, including a doctor,
painter, and town mayor, took up their positions, as they were seen
melding their way to the fictional world of Clown Town by plane,
train and automobile. Coming up with a different idea for entries
every year can be difficult, but for the imaginative team at Marketeers
CC ideas don't seem to present too much of a problem. The difficult
part is actually choosing which idea to go with, ensuring that it
can be translated on to a 100ft cart, and understood by the Carnival
judges and thousands of people who go along to watch the annual
spectacle. Club captain Kenny Rogers said; "Last year we had
a pantomime theme, but we'd originally wanted to do a circus theme,
so this year we decided on clowns, but with a difference. "We
know the circus has been done time and again, so we started to think
about clowns, but in a different way. "After lots of talks
we came up with the idea of creating a clown town where nothing
makes sense. "This meant we were moving away from the traditional
clown-type entry, but it was different enough, so no-ones ever done
it before.
"We thought it could be difficult to portray a Clown Town on
the cart, so we came up with the idea of planes, trains and automobiles
so we thought all the clowns should be on their way to Clown Town"
A lot of thought goes into creating an idea for a
Carnival entry. Though all club members am welcome to come up with
ideas it is down to a select group of four or five people to bone
the idea and ensure that it is well-thought out and can work. The
Marketeers submitted the idea of a Clown
Town the day after last year's Carnival, so watch out because the
likelihood is that they have already put forward their idea for
next year's Carnival.
