Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never, in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE
1959
For one year, prior to the formation of The Sydenham Carnival Club,
a certain person decided to enter Bridgwater Carnival as a Juvenile
Feature, with an idea entitled "Emergency Ward 10". This particular
theme is now down in the record books as being entered by R. J.
Stoodley & Co. At the same time another Juvenile Feature was being
entered by an M. Dando & Co. with an idea entitled "Dartmoor's Annual
Outing". The result being that the limited number of carnivals entered
by these juveniles resulted each time in a first place for M. Dando
& Co. and second place for R. Stoodley & Co. Some of the members
Taken part in those particular ideas were S. GREEN, R. BURROWS,
R. STOODLEY, L. CARTER B. NICHOSON, R. ANTHONY, M. DANDO, J. PARKES,
R. TURNER, J. THOMAS and T. HOOPER. From here it was decided that
possibly a Carnival Club could be born if only these young fellows
got their heads together with the same aim in mind so that they
could challenge the "Big Guns" of that time in the "Local Features"
section. It was not long after this that a mere possibility became
reality. After discussions with officials of the Sydenham Youth
Center, a club would be formed.
